The nervous and cardiovascular systems are intricately related to each other's functionality. The cardiovascular centers in the brainstem control the cardiac function and maintain the vascular tone to optimize the blood flow to and from different organs. The nervous system is dependent on the cardiovascular system for the nutrition.

NERVOUS SYSTEM

Neurology studies the anatomy, function, and physiology of the nervous system.

  • The central nervous system comprises the brain, the spinal cord, and the autonomic nervous system. The cerebral cortex houses the functionality into areas that subserve cognition, movement, the somatosensory part, the visual cortex, and the auditory cortex. The brainstem houses the autonomic centers that arouse the brain, and regulate the heartbeat and respiratory function.

  • The peripheral nervous system transfers the electrical impulses up and down through the nerves, chemically through the neuromuscular junction into the muscles.

Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and blood vessels, such as arteries, capillaries, and veins. The heart plays a vital role as a pump. The internal carotid arteries nourish the anterior brain, while the vertebral arteries nourish the posterior brain. The circle of Willis, an arterial anastomosis, connects these two regions.

The heart efficiently propels oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood through the arteries to supply the brain and the entire body with essential substances. Oxygenated blood is transported from the lungs to the brain, while essential nutrients are absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Carbon dioxide is eliminated from the blood through the lungs for detoxification, and the liver releases detoxified substances into the distal gut through the biliary system for elimination. The kidneys filter toxins and metabolic by-products from the blood for excretion.
